Why Eben Falaquera?
Shem-Ṭob Eben Falaquera (1235-1291) was a Spanish Jewish philosopher, writer, and translator born in Toledo, Spain, which was a major center of Jewish learning and culture during the Middle Ages. Eben Falaquera was a prominent figure in the Jewish philosophical and intellectual circle of Toledo, which was known for its rich tradition of Aristotelian scholarship. He was a student of the renowned philosopher and Talmudic scholar, Ribbi Moses ben Ezra, and later became a prominent figure in his own right.
This curriculum focuses on the anthropological and linguistic analysis of the Tanakh; Hebrew philology, morphology, and grammar; Sephardic history; Hazzanuth; Talmud; Geonic responsa; Andalusian rabbinic jurisprudence; and Responsa of the Western Sepharadim. Students learn all areas of Jewish law, with a strong foundation of the Mishneh Torah, and practical rabbinics (Marriage, Divorce, Counseling, and Arbitration). Some students are also taught ritual slaughtering, and horticulture. Moreover, the students must take courses in public speaking, arbitration, philosophy, psychology, and counseling.
